Dominica is the Caribbean without the resorts: a volcanic island with a river for every day of the year, a boiling lake at the end of a proper hike, and sperm whales resident offshore all year round. It's an eco-travel island, best done with organised outfits. Crime statistics swing on tiny numbers here, but they've been swinging the wrong way โ go organised rather than freelance.

18.13 homicides per 100,000 people in 2024 โ a high rate by any standard.
Higher than 91% of the 230 countries and territories measured.

Ranked 42nd most peaceful country in the world.
The GPI leaves out most microstates โ 1.64 is our estimate from its published methodology.
No army and quiet politics, but a homicide spike (18 per 100,000 is a handful of cases at this population size) and a high policing rate drive the number.
Personal and economic freedom โ higher is better.
Dominica: 8.2
Ranked 34th freest country in the world.
The Human Freedom Index skips most small islands, Dominica included, so this 8.16 is our own estimate โ built with the index's published method: the same 12 categories of personal and economic freedom, equally weighted.
