India is not a place to visit without care. LGBT rights are solid, ranking 58th, and violent crime is moderate, at 85th. Its weak spot, though, is conflict: there is significant exposure, placed 151st. Freedom is only partly protected, women's safety is fair and road deaths sit mid-range, with all three ranking between 98th and 107th.

Nearly fifteen deaths per 100,000 people a year is a whisker under the world average of fifteen.
Is it safe to visit?
Reasonable by the numbers, but not on two wheels or on foot — nearly half the deaths are motorcyclists and a fifth are pedestrians.
Conflict
Conflict deaths inside the country in the last twelve months, as recorded by the Uppsala conflict database, civilians killed on purpose, and any UN sanctions or court order over a war. The worst of those sets the colour. Lower is better.

Is it safe to visit?
Not safe in Kashmir or Manipur. The rest of the country, including everywhere tourists go, sits apart from it.

Six freedoms rated 0–4 by Freedom House — protest, speech, press, religion, movement and due process. The weakest rating sets the colour, and the total places the country inside it — higher is better.

In India the lowest is due process at 1. Total 12 of 24.
Is it safe to visit?
A multiparty democracy where harassment of journalists and critics has increased and Muslims face rising persecution. Due process is the low rating. New criminal laws lengthen the time police can detain people without trial.
LGBT Rights
LGBT equality in law and daily life — higher is better.
India: 5.2
Ranked 58th most equal in the world for LGBT people.
Why this rank?
The Supreme Court struck down Section 377, the colonial-era ban on gay sex, in 2018 but declined to legalise marriage in 2023. Law and opinion both score in the low fifties.
Is it safe to visit?
Fine in the cities, which have open Pride, corporate visibility and dating apps everywhere. Small-town and family pressure still rules most lives.
Women's Safety
Women's safety — feeling safe out at night, political violence against women, a fair hearing in court, and how normal violence at home is, with the night figure setting a floor on the colour — higher is better.

Why this rank?
Sixty-eight percent of women feel safe out alone at night. The courts rate below fair, partner violence is eighteen percent, and four in ten women think wife-beating can be justified.
