Italy is a safe country to visit. Two measures stand out: there is no conflict at all, ranking 1st, and violent crime is close to non-existent, the 11th-lowest homicide rate. Freedom is well protected, placed 55th, which is its weakest measure but still inside the top third. Road deaths are low, LGBT rights are solid and women's safety is good, with all three ranking between 29th and 53rd.

Fine for a visitor. The rate is low, and strangers are rarely involved.
Why we updated the score?
The interior ministry has published its 2025 count, down on 2024. The UN takes its figure from the ministry a year later, so we've used the new count.

Five deaths per 100,000 people a year is above the EU average of four and a half but well under half the world average of fifteen.

Safe by world standards, but scooters are where the risk is.
Why we updated the score?
The WHO's 2021 figure was Italy's own count. The statistics institute has published a preliminary 2025 count, so we've used it, and the rate is unchanged.

Nothing to think about. Its deployments are peacekeeping and NATO missions, and nothing threatens it at home.

Is it safe to visit?
Competitive elections and civil liberties generally respected. Press is the low rating, with significant limits, and corruption and organised crime challenge the rule of law. Daily life is open.

LGBT equality in law and daily life — higher is better.

Ranked 35th most equal in the world for LGBT people.
Why this rank?
There are civil unions only, since 2016, with no marriage or joint adoption, and the current government is restricting registration of same-sex parents' children. The law index scores 74, public opinion 59.
Is it safe to visit?
Fine. Western Europe's clearest gap between society and state, with big Prides and broad acceptance under a government pushing the other way.
Women's Safety
Women's safety — feeling safe out at night, political violence against women, a fair hearing in court, and how normal violence at home is, with the night figure setting a floor on the colour — higher is better.

The courts rate near perfect and violence at home is rare. Fewer than half of women feel safe walking alone at night, short of the more than half that green needs.
